After the 1960s, many African Americans and other minority communities as well as women were denied equal opportunities in housing, education and other areas. Many Americans faced unequal economic opportunities and jobs were not distributed adequately to the entire populace (Gourevitch, 163). Unemployment rates were high and economic recessions were regular and highly destructive to the people in the lower social classes (Gourevitch, 163). The cold war in Europe led to economic difficulties as there was free flow of trade between communist Western Europe countries and capitalist Eastern Europe countries. The McCracken Report as mentioned by Goldthorpe states that ...

Abstract Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is defined as an impairment in neurobehavioral functioning that is characterized by constant and dysfunctional indications of inattention and hyperactivity. Individuals with ADHD usually have major disabilities in interpersonal, social, and academic performance. Moreover, ADHD is related to a number of co-morbid disorders and disabilities like learning impairments, disruptive behavioral patterns, and mood disorders. Numerous treatments have been studied by researchers, but most of them focused on pharmacological treatments. Generally, there is a lack of research on the effectiveness of behavioral treatments in treating ADHD. One of the potential treatments for ADHD-- positive ...

Intensity of Each Industry Force
Bargaining power of buyers is low to medium because not only consumers have various alternatives in the CSD industry to select from but both the Pepsi and Coke offered multiple offerings to beverage lovers. The power of suppliers is very high in the cola industry. The number of soft drink bottlers in the United States has greatly reduced from two thousand in 1970 to three hundred by the end of the year 2009. The industry is still dominated by Pepsi and Coca-Cola. These bottlers helped the national beverage brands secure shelf spaces and customer attention. Since there ...
Abstract
Computational complexity was introduced and developed by Hartmanis and Stearns in order to provide methods in measuring the degree of complexity or difficulty of computational problems or functions as well as to measure the efficiency of algorithms. It was developed through understanding of numerous complex problems and analysis of the issues within these problems. The history of the subject of computational history started with the theoretical computational model or a machine developed by Alan Turing in during the 1930s. In his paper, he convinced the scientific community that developing an effective algorithm is possible. The Turing machine paved way ...
Abstract
Several experts have been concern about the effectiveness of recycling in mitigating the effects of pollution and global warming. Some even argued that the recycling process is economically and environmentally ineffective due to the large costs and large amounts of energy required for the process. However, the practice of recycling should be continued and improved since it has numerous potential benefits against its alternatives. First, recycling is not a waste of money since the alternatives to this strategy such as incineration and landfilling has larger costs due to environmental damages. Second, issues and problems associated with recycling could be ...

Human Genome Evolution and Disease
Genome evolution is one of the key aspects that have helped determine the overall position of human beings from a scientific perspective, as it focuses more on providing scientists with an understanding of the changes occurring within the human body (Tomkins, 2016, p.261). The study of genome evolution has focused more on evaluating the changes in structure, otherwise referred to as a sequence, and size of the human gene within a given period. The study provides scientists with a better understanding of the changes occurring within the human body as well as some of the changes that human beings ...
Throughout the history, there were created many films that involved the elements of sex and sexuality. One of such films is Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1997 movie, Boogie Nights which describes the pornography business in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. In this industry viewers have a chance to meet a lot of characters which are passing through different problems. The protagonist of the story is a handsome seventeen year-old nightclub dishwasher, Eddie Adams, who was introduced to the pornography industry. One night pornographer Jack Horner noticed Eddie and turned him into a porn star Dirk Diggler. ...

Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) refers to a computerized system used to store fingerprint images. Typically, investigators feed new print images into AFIS to identify the best matches. Accordingly, the identification process allows investigators to narrow their search parameters. Usually, AFIS technicians perform the final analyses of retrieved images to maintain accuracy. Prior to the computerization of such systems, the process of comparing fingerprint images was tedious and sometimes inaccurate. The development of AFIS, however, allowed technicians to perform comparisons within minutes and achieve a relatively higher accuracy of image identification.

Art-related disciplines are critical to educating citizens and students of every age. Nevertheless, the arts have declined significantly in schools and public participation. According to a recent study by Rabkin and Hedberg (2011), fewer eighteen-year-olds in a 2008 survey reported receiving arts instruction in their childhood than a similar age group surveyed in 1982. The research suggested that the provision of arts education dropped from 65% in 1982 to about 50% in 2008 (Rabkin & Hedberg, 2011). Moreover, it included survey data gathered in 2002 and 1992 with each successive period indicating a severe decline in Americans’ access to arts ...
The research aims to discover the impact that computers have had on individual learning. Currently, education is crossing into an age of information. This “new age” is expected to change the universe similar to industrial age. This new age is also going to require computers integration for information access. In order to maximize learning, the learning environment must provide learning resources in order to encourage problem solving and support teaching. Thus, it is important to understand the impact that computers have on learning in order to better apply them to learning. The findings from this research can help proper ...
Movie Review: THX-1138
THX-1138, the main character in the film THX-1138, works as a magnum operator in cell 94107. He was literally created to manipulate the magnum along with other people in his society. In general, the THX-1138 movie is one of the best films that the creator of Star Wars, George Lucas, has ever scripted and directed. In 1976, Lucas produced Electronic Labyrinth: THX-113: 4EB, a short film that won various awards and introduced Lucas to movie fans globally (“George Lucas Biography”). The success of Electronic Labyrinth impressed the director of The Godfather, Frances Coppela, who urged Warner Brothers to provide ...
Gender is a very powerful category and one that many different people have used in order to explain culture and society. The role of women in society had for the longest time been constricted to the private sphere, the home, taking care of the children and being the primary Linchpin that could take care of the family and be the emotional and often moral center of the family. Women in the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries have gained more rights and have fought for equality with men. When Korean families immigrated to the United States in the ...
A: Profile of CCP Leader
Li Keqiang assumed the position of Premier of the State Council of China during the 18th Congress of the Communist Party (CCP) in 2012. He is expected to feature prominently in the 19th CCP, scheduled for 2017. Many reports indicate that Xi Jinping has consolidated his power over the CCP Politburo and will hold on to power for two more terms totaling 15 years at the top. Due to this, it is apparent that Li Keqiang could either work as the Chinese Premier for a long time to come or he might become the focus of a major power ...
Trends in Healthcare Costs
Over the last three decades, the healthcare sector has grown rapidly. This has been necessitated by a growing population and their increasing demand for healthcare as well as the increasing complexity of illnesses presented within the healthcare sector. On the other hand, he globalization issues have also necessitated that the healthcare adapts to the needs of a more diverse population and hence growth (Kaiser Family Foundation, 2016). This growth has been tremendous and there is no doubt that the costs of care have been affected significantly. In the 1970s, the cost per individual was estimated at $356 but this ...

Prison establishment: concerns and issues
Over the last five years, the number of female inmates in US prisons has increased twice as that of the men. In the last decade, the numbers of correctional facilities that house both men and women have also risen. Though there were fears as to the possible repercussions of ‘blending’ male and female inmates in one institution, the changes that were evinced were for the better rather than for the worse. In one instance, noticeable improvements were seen in the conduct of the male inmates. However, some of the inmates have engaged in sexual relations with each other. ...
One of the most iconic pieces of television fashion in the 1970s is Laverne’s iconic monogrammed sweater from the sitcom Laverne and Shirley. In fact, the sitcom itself was a wonderful time capsule of 1970s fashions, particularly for women at the time – it reflected a kind of working-class simplicity that was indicative of changing gender norms during that era as women entered the workforce and began living more independently. In the episode “Haunted House,” for instance, both Laverne and Shirley wear simple cuffed blue jeans, light blue socks and simple brown shoes, which are eminently practical (and previously ...
Several factors have led to the rapid changes in sentencing structures in the United States. According to Latessa and Smith: “Following a very long period of relative inactivity (1930-1974), American sentencing laws and practices began to undergo rapid change, a fundamental restructuring of the sentencing process” (2015, p. 19). This is supported by Phelps (2011, p. 33), who argued that “Scholars of mass incarceration point to the 1970s as a pivotal turning point in US penal history, marked by a shift towards more punitive policies and a consensus that ‘nothing works’ in rehabilitating inmates.” Four main factors have been ...
Xerox Case
What kind of strategic planning process (bottom-up or top-down) did Xerox follow for its turnaround? What inference can you make about the effectiveness of this approach? Needless to say that changing of the strategy in Xerox was paramount for the company’s further development or even survival in 2000-2002 (Mohr, Sengupta, & Slater, 2010, p.492). There are different types of strategic planning to be adopted, and it must be based on the competitive advantages of the firm, its objectives and vision, and specific action plans to be followed. Top-down perspective of the strategic planning has been widely used for decades, ...
Introductory Remarks
At this point, it is no secret the American society shows a degree of tolerance lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered individuals never enjoyed in the 20th century. The question emerges of why it is that people have grown more tolerant towards and supportive of LGBT individuals. Media categories, such as television and films considered the carriers of culture, influence people’s perception, as does the culture itself shaping it. Thus, the way such phenomenon as same-sex relationships along with their participants are depicted in television and movies determines how tolerantly the society will perceive such people. The major research ...
It is easy as a student of history to ignore major development with Native American tribes after the end of the nineteenth century and the so-called “closing of the frontier.” This is seen by many as the end of an era and a time where the federal government had finally settled its policy regarding the status and treatment of this country’s many Native American tribes. Charles Wilkinson in Blood Struggle paints a completely different picture of how the relationship between the tribes and the US government developed through the course of the second half of the twentieth century. ...
The 1980s was a complex era of transition, which saw the rise of military power, but also the emergence of new technology, as the fight against communist threats intensified. During this decade, the sci-fi genre reached immense popularity, and was closely related to the new blockbuster films which Hollywood exported throughout the world. During this decade, illegal immigration, the memory of the Vietnam War and the transformation of masculinity under the threat of feminism became prominent issues, which were reflected in the popular media of the time. As a genre which is particularly fit to reflect the anxieties and ...
Reggae music is a musical genre characterized by colorful individuals who have created a huge impact not only in the entertainment scene, but also in the political, social and economic fronts. Demographic movements accentuate the fact that current and future trends in the social, political, and economic fronts are directly affected by the issue of an aging population. It is a reality for people regardless of race or culture. However, the rate at which demographic shifts differs in countries worldwide will have significant effects on developed and developing countries when saddled by a high number of ageing population. This is because in a typical developing country, baby boomers opt to delay having babies or starting their own families as they focus more on themselves and career advancement. The same problem ...

ABSTRACT
Capital punishment is the most serious sentence that can be assigned to any criminal offender. Capital punishment, or the death penalty, is one of the most controversial, social, ethical and legal topics of debate in the modern era. Many American states allow the death penalty and others do not. There are many people who are opposed to the death penalty claiming it is morally, ethically questionable and unjust. At the same time, there are many who fully support the death penalty, at least in the severest of cases; like murder. That said, finding common ground between the two antithetical ...
The United States is known for having higher degrees of class inequality than many other industrialized countries in the West. Till the early 1970s individual family income in the country remained stable and equally distributed due to economic recession and wars. Family income began to grow more unequal since the early 1970s; for instance, the income of middle class families stagnated towards the late 1970s as against the growth following the Vietnam War. Most importantly, during the 1970s America’s bigger than life image among the developed countries of the world as an unchallenged capitalistic economy received a critical ...
Introduction
A discussion among the classical economists and the Keynesian economists continues on the government intervention in the free markets. According to the classical economists, the free market mechanism can develop solutions for the crisis in the market if there is no external influence on the markets. The Keynesian economy merely expresses that the free market economy carries the risk of generating crises and undesired deficit or surplus in the economy when the demand cannot clear the supply (Posner 234-252). The discussion on the government intervention is changing direction each time the world economy suffers from a global crisis becomes ...

Affirmative action programs are those policy actions that are meant at correcting past injustices that have been perpetrated against a group of people and any inequalities that exist between them and the native people in a ...
Black power emerged as a result of the efforts made by African Americans in the 1950s and 1960s in the clamor for equal representation and opportunities in all the spheres of the public American life. The concept led to the rise of the black power movements across the United States of America. Chief among the black power movements is the civil rights movement led by Dr. Martin Luther King. King focused on accomplishing the mission of achieving equal rights for African American so that they could participate in the social, economic and political affairs without discrimination (Joseph 90). With ...
Teenage boys may feel that girls are aliens, because they seem different, but in Neil Gaiman’s short Sci-Fi story, “How to talk to girls at parties”, the girls really are from another planet. The author humorously recounts the experience of two teenage boys, Vic and Enn, whose lack of experience around girls and nascent sexuality, cause them to ignore the visible signs that the girls they meet at a party are not from this world. Throughout the story, Enn, from whose perspective the story is told, is so focused on trying to talk to the girls he meets ...

Introduction Youth homelessness is a general term that refers to vagrancy that affects a homogenous youth population. This population includes “unaccompanied youth, runaways, throwaways, street youth, and systems youth” (Moore 2). Homelessness is an age-old social problem that has plagued most modern societies. In the United States, the problem regarding youth homelessness can be traced as far back as the earliest history of the country; back when the first Europeans settled in the New World. According to Moore, an expert affiliated with the National Center for Homeless Education, youth homelessness has been existent while the country was ...
Nazi, was a name mostly used to refer to Germany during the dictatorship periods of Adolf Hitler. This was from 1933 to 1945 where Hitler joined the Nazi party and became the leader (Levine 1). It was therefore during this period that the economy in the region was under severe stretch. Hitler himself had contributed much to this as he had engaged in racial segregation where he divided German’s based on their ethnic status. Therefore, after the Nazi party was created, there were several terms that were stated by the proponents. First, the requirement for one to belong ...
Question 2: Energy and Risks
Energy is fundamental to life. Without the resource, billions of individuals would remain hungry and cold. The prominent source of energy emanates from fossil fuels such as natural gas, coal, and oil in the developing and industrialized nations. Despite providing numerous benefits that sustain human, plant, and animal life, the fossil fuels also present disadvantages that have resulted in ecological damage, political disruption, and production failures. This paper attempts to compare the political and environmental challenges introduced by natural gasses, coal, and oil as well as possible remedies that can alleviate the problems. The greenhouse emissions that arise from ...

This paper is aimed at analyzing subculture of punk, the role of media and style in punk youth subculture. The Don't Ask Don't Tell is a policy that was introduced by Clinton following his election to office in 1993. It works by preventing individuals from openly sharing their sexual orientation and also preventing others from seeking to know the same. Clinton’s administration instituted this policy in February 1994, and this lasted until September 2011. Throughout its course, the policy has been challenged by various problems. First, it did not ...
In contemporary society, having children is no longer associated with families like it used to be. It is important to note that Blackstone (2014, p. 68) distinguished the terms childless and childfree because each term refers to the differences in motives for not having children. Childless families are those in which the parents want to have children but do not have them, whereas childfree families are those in which the husband and wife agree to skip parenthood. The term non-parents can be used to refer to both childless and childfree parents. The first trends of increasing childfree families can ...

In 2008, Japan tried to re-establish diplomatic relations with North Korea. Diplomatic relations had not existed between the two countries since the Korean Peninsula. Japan promised to provide North Korea with economic and financial instruments to boost its economy while North Korea agreed to investigate the case of the abduction of Japanese citizens by the North Korean government in the 1970s and 1980s (Smith, 2013). Japan also made a commitment that in the event that North Korea fulfilled its part of the negotiated promises, it was going to lift economic sanctions that were imposed in 2006. Introduction
This literature seeks to explore the correlation between class issues and schooling based on an Australian model of study. Most of the authors in this review agree that there is a correlation between class issues and the way schools are perceived and operated. The rise of neoliberalism has led way to an induction of creating a greater divide between the haves and have nots. Australian schools have shifted from the dynamics of the 1970s and 1980’s where the idea of a more balanced school system was part of educational reform. However, as of 2009 this has shifted and ...

Rap has entered the history of American art over a century ago. The people who have laid the foundations for rap as we know it today were the two big ethnical groups of the American society: African Americans and people from the Caribbean Islands. Folk artists of the mentioned origins were telling rhymed stories with the accompaniment of rhythmic music (drums and sparse instrumentation). This music already existed years before hip-hop was developed and became popular. Rapping is actually reading or chanting of rhythmic lyrics that were designed to set a beat. Many specialists are of the opinion that ...

David Williamson’s 1971 Australian play The Removalists revolves around the story of a pair of police officers, Constable Neville Ross and Sergeant Dan Simmonds, and their investigation of a domestic assault charge placed by Fiona and Kate against Fiona’s husband Kenny in a Melbourne suburb in the 1970s. Through a tremendously realistic style and deeply complex exploration of the themes of violence, treatment of women and police brutality, The Removalists manages to create a uniquely compelling portrait of 1970s Australian life and its changing social norms, as well as the universal capacity for human beings to inflict ...
Modern America is in a situation of global transformation in all spheres of life. This is most clearly manifested in the radical change in traditional family values and marriage, which leads to the erosion of semantic values of the American mentality, the historical model of social change in the institution of family and marriage. “There is evidence, however, that the structure of social relationships in the United States has shifted in recent decades” (McPherson et al., 354). This paper discusses how television broadcasts family values and patterns in American society during a few decades. In the 1950ies American family ...
A prolific writer and researcher, the publications and theories proposed by Kay Deaux have impacted the field of sociology since the 1970s. While Deaux has not published a biography, she did give a fairly extensive interview to Anne Rutherford discussing her life in relation to her body of work (Deaux, 2010). By coordinating her biographical background with her research, it is possible to draw broad conclusions concerning the evolution of her interests and the influences of her life experiences. Kay Beaux was born in Warren, Ohio in 1941 and grew up in a Cleveland neighborhood that she describes as “ ...
Paul Schrader’s internationally acclaimed film; Taxi Driver produced in the mid-1970s tells the story of an ex-Vietnam War veteran named Travis Bickle, a young man who desperately tries to search for the purpose in his life. Other aspects, such as the effects on the affordability of education and healthcare, are uncovered. An evaluation of ...

Introduction The theory of natural resource curse can be founded back from the 1970s. Resource curse has been an important topic for researchers since two subsequent decades; multiple research efforts have proposed the association between the production of resources, numerous socio-political ills, and, economic underperformance. The role of natural resources in the growth of the economy has been a question of immense debate. If the role of natural resources is considered in common sense, then economic growth theories propose that natural resources are the gift and economies through building their capital can grow economies. However, if the revenue spending ...
