After evaluating all three of these excellent stories, I have determined that the winner of this fiction contest must be “Rock Springs” by Richard Ford. Telling the story of a father on the run from the law, attempting to start a new life for himself and his daughter, “Rock Springs” does a tremendous job of showcasing the unfairness of justice, and the inability for people to truly escape their sins. For its incredible command of character, its thematic richness, and the endlessly compelling prose, “Rock Springs” is the clear winner of this contest. Ford centers “Rock Springs” around the ...

A Personal Opinion In the United States, local government plays a vital role in the development of counties, municipalities, and districts. These governments work below the state level and usually serve as the “middleman” between the state government and the local residents. Besides the all- purpose local governments, there may be unique purpose local governments which serve a number of purposes; such as maintaining the sewerage system across a municipality or township, overseeing public transportation, establishing districts for fire protection and engaging in other public works. In Texas District 9, the local government manages district ...

People commit a variety of crimes on a daily basis. Some crimes are minor incidents that do not have an extensive consequence or sentence to uphold by the offender. There are crimes that are committed that are in a higher bracket and these crimes have a more serious sentence. People often commit a crime for a number of reasons. Some crimes committed were not even done by the person who was charged in the incident. There needs to be proof or evidence that can place the alleged criminal at the crime scene when it accrued. Judith Butler wrote the article “The Values of Difficulty” as a response to the article “Language Crimes: A Lesson in How Not to Write, Courtesy of the Professoriate” written by Denis Dutton. Butler defends her position in her essay and states that academic writers need to use complex terminology in order to express themselves and to shape the meaning in the right way. She believes that there is a connection between the language and the meaning and that a term could be misunderstood if simple language would be used. I agree with Judith Butler because she proves her point ...
Introduction
The criminal justice system in the United States is complex and has a trove of advantages for the defendant in comparison to several other nations. The rights include the right to an attorney and the right to remain silent during a police interrogation. Apart from these rights, the process to find someone guilty and sentence that person is a tedious process. Unlike justice systems which rely on circumstantial evidence, the American Justice system insists on the presence of physical evidence to corroborate. In addition, a lengthy process ensures checkpoints in different areas to prevent convicting innocent people of crimes ...

The United States and the then Soviet Socialist Republic, or USSR, had always had ideological differences underlining their relations. The US has always been the world’s champion of democratic ideals, while the USSR promoted the socialist ideology. In World War II, however, the two countries set aside their differences and formed an alliance with other countries to fight a common enemy: the Axis Powers that included Germany, Japan and Italy. The defeat of the Axis Powers resulted in power vacuums, which the two countries immediately tried to fill, thereby, resulting in a contest of superpowers. Suspicions of each ...

The mind deals with the mental process, thought and consciousness whereas the body is about the physical aspects of the brain (McLeod 1). That simple explanation shows that there is a close relationship between the two. The question this paper tends to answer is the close connection between the two but the fate of the mind after death. According to ...

Of all short-stay, peer-to-peer companies, Airbnb is probably most prominent and, for that matter, most controversial. Founded based on limited property offerings in specific areas ...

The contract that Noora and Reem entered into is a good example of unilateral contracts, where a promise from one of the parties is made to motivate the other party to act. Based on a review of the literature on Islamic law on contracts, what Noora did was wrong. The Islamic law points out that any form of agreement should not contain any uncertainty. This provision is referred to as the “the rule against Gharar . Given that the two parties negotiated in good faith, Noora was wrong by bringing in a sense of uncertainty. This is because she changed ...

Anytime a story is told by different people, there are understandable number of variations. This is especially true for Greek and Roman myths, which were written during vastly different centuries with opposite views of religion. The Greeks seemed to view their early gods as perfect yet still human with their interactions with mortals. The actions of the divine motivated and drove the course of the stories. The Romans, by contrast, put their gods on a pedestal and shifted the blame to the mortals. The writings of Hesiod and Ovid reflect these differences, depicting the actions in a perfect light ...

In a recent article for The Atlantic magazine titled “A World Without Work”, Derek Thompson (2015) describes as an impending “era of technological unemployment,” where automation as a result of technological advances will result in a steady and widespread decline in jobs, which Thompson characterizes as permanent. Thompson writes that the end of work does not necessarily signify a full on and impending end to employment as we know it in the economy. Neither does it suggest that the next decade will usher in uncontrollable levels of unemployment, either. What it suggests is the very real and live possibility ...

The pageants are organised at several levels — regional, national, international and so on. The number of pageants are many and the audience is huge and diverse. It is stated that these beauty pageants constitute modernisation, values and principles, ...

Republican’s Dwight Eisenhower beat Stevenson in a similar manner to the year 1952. This happened despite the intense speculation in the winter of the previous year the incumbent Dwight Eisenhower would not run owing to his failing health. The year 1956 was also the year that television commercials were used a great deal ...
The prison system that currently exists today offers a retribution measure instead of corrective actions to assert and ensure that the convicted assailants, after serving their prison time, could go back to the community as responsible individuals. While this is the case, a documentary featured in 2005 and 2009 documents a different role of prisons. Aside from housing convicted individuals, it also serves as a modern day asylum for mentally-ill individuals convicted of committing a crime against society.
I am writing this memo as my personal take on the existing problem regarding the release of convicted mentally-ill individuals to the society after serving ...
Injustice in any form or circumstance is the denial of the basic fundamental right, the right to justice. As a human being we are entitled to live our lives with the right to liberty and dignity. But the privilege of this right is enjoyed by only a select portion of the society. On the other hand some are forced to lead a life of denial, disgrace and deprivation. This is the case with the Dalit clan of Tamil Nadu. The injustices done to them are a mark of shame on the face of humanity. They have been denied the right to property, to ...

The fundamental objective of governments is to protect their citizens. As the most discernable government arm, law enforcement authorities (police force) are on the forefront in the contest to protect the public from harm, and to maintain public order. To achieve this objective, the society gives a unique power in civil government to the police force, which involves controlling the behaviour of the public. In the most undeviating way, and on a daily routine, police officers are involved in the control and management of the behaviour of the fellow citizens (Adams et.al, 1999).

In his book Cyropaedia “The Education of Cyrus”, Xenophon gives an account of an imaginary life of Cyrus the great. Though the book does not give accurate information about the real life of Cyrus the great, it helps inform various qualities that ...

Humans, as the creation myth suggests, are co-creators who were made to impact nature by modifying it through their activities. This is depicted in the material culture that rests in national parks, museums and other reservoirs of cultural heritage. As people live in an area, rather than simply making do with the conditions of the place and what it supplies to them, they adapt to it by producing new forms of material culture through technology that eventually makes the place change. This shows how humans are more than just consumers of nature who preserve and perpetuate its conditions, but ...
