Tragedy of the commons, as envisioned by Hardin, is the infinite freedom of the people to use or make use of the finite free resources of the world. The unchecked and wanton use by the people of these free resources results in a tragedy, according to Hardin, because eventually such use will overwhelm the resources themselves.
