Introduction The Tohoku magnitude-9 earthquake occurred on March 11th 2011. Its epicenter was on the undersea floor of the Pacific Ocean, about 45 miles (72 kilometers) east of Tohoku in northeastern Japan, and at a depth of about 20 miles (32 km). The cause was the sudden movement at the junction of two tectonic plates – the Eurasian Plate rising over the Pacific Plate.
