Introduction
Maurice Merleau-Ponty begins his essay “Eye and Mind” with a comment on science. Studying the world in the manner that science does, takes a person out of one’s body, he says. It places the world in a series of definitions, constructs, indices and variables, allowing only the understanding of minute, exact changes to have a status of legitimacy. He says science “comes face to face with the real world only at rare intervals” (Ponty, 121).
