Paul Joseph Goebbels was born to a Catholic, working class family in the Rhineland, Germany in 1897 and attended Heidelberg University on a church scholarship, receiving his PhD in 1921. In early life, his goal was to become a novelist or playwright, but he had limited success in this field and soon found that his true talent was for propaganda and public relations.
