Paul Joseph Goebbels was born to a Catholic, working class family in the Rhineland, Germany in 1897 and attended Heidelberg University on a church scholarship, receiving his PhD in 1921. In early life, his goal was to become a novelist or playwright, but he had limited success in this field and soon found that his true talent was for propaganda and public relations. He joined the National Socialist German Workers Party in 1923 and was made Party leader (Gauleiter) of Berlin in 1926, a post that he retained until his suicide in 1945.
