Published in 1996 non-fiction book and 2007 movie adaptation Into the Wild follow the journey of a young university graduate Christopher McCandless. In the early nineties, he took the name of Alexander Supertramp and left society in the quest for his true self – only to perish in the Alaskan wilderness after surviving there without help for 113 days.

McCandless wasn’t the first one who have chosen to renounce materialistic values and to roam the earth unbridled. Still, his impulse and his tragic end resonated with many. The book poses many questions about humanity, finding a place in society, transcendentalism, and hubris. The central paradox is that finding one’s true identity sometimes means that we must sever all the ties to others. Still, without human connections, one cannot survive for long.
