The Watergate crisis (1972-1974) marks a fundamental breach in the confidence Americans had in the integrity of government officials and in the American political system. Added to the Vietnam War and the economic decline that began to erode people’s income during this period, the Watergate crisis destroyed whatever American idealism remained about the leaders of the nation (Packer, 2011).
