This concert featured Glendale College Concert Singers, and it was also led by Chris Rios and Chris Coulter as musical directors. The Glendale College Community ...

Explain the cultural/historical context for the performance.
The world of music is now quite diverse, with jazz takes not the last place in it. If we immerse yourself in the history of the origins of jazz, we note that the music of this style has a large number of types and areas, which to some extent may be quite different from each other. It would seem that jazz means some one particular trend in music, but it is so much more. For example, among particularities we have the blues, swing, bebop, fusion, postbol, cool, mainstream, hard -bop, stride But this list does not end there. Throughout ...

The purpose of this paper is to try to analyse two symphony concerts which are performed by the Danish conductor Thomas Sondergard. The both concerts consist of the pieces of music of Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich and his symphonies No. 5 (C mol) and No. 11 (D mol). These concerts do not have lyrical mood, but they draw bright musical picture which is rather dramatic. Abrupt change of rhythms, dissonance notes, dialogues of musical instruments immerse the listener in the world of misery and opposition to the evil. Both symphonies have life-asserting character though.1 The four part symphony No. ...
The relevance of this work is expressed by the fact that the interest to Japan is increasing today. Many people, who are interested in modern Japan, are also interested in its history and culture. Consequently, the interest to theaters is also increasing, including the theater of Kabuki, which captivates the audience with its colorfulness and accessibility. The aim of this work is to fully consider the birth of Kabuki theater and study its origins, the specificity and role in Japanese culture. On the basis of the work’s purpose I have set the following objectives: - Consider the occurrence ...

Storyville or as the locals simply called “The District” was the area of New Orleans, residents and visitors of which attended for the carnal pleasures they could receive from living there numerous priestesses of love. Music lovers went there to listen to jazz virtuosos. Actually, this “red light district”, or Storyville, was established in 1897 by the authorities of New Orleans to put prostitution to order. The authorities legalized these “activities” based on the schemes tested in the Dutch and German port cities. Storyville was named after Sydney Storey, city council member, who is considered one of the founding ...
Modern music and classical music: two different directions, two different fates, different range of listeners, different influences. These two genres of music are completely unlike each other. Nowadays people have their right to choose what they believe is best for them. Mostly, they are not influenced by the crowd when it comes to their personal preferences. Each person has his own tastes and it is normal. Someone is ready to listen to Mozart, Schubert and Bach for weeks, and someone finds himself in all day long listening to "Queen", "Nirvana" or Depeche Mode. But why do people refer to ...

The film got a critical acclaim and numerous nominations and awards including the nomination for Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Aerosmith is one of the most popular and long-lasting American rock acts still around today. Some contend that it is the all-time best-selling rock band from America. In 1973 they released their first studio album titled Aerosmith, and this was followed by Get Your Wings the year after. I attended the Western Kansas Orchestra Festival concert on September 16th, 2015 at Garden City. The concert consisted of over 500 string players who were grouped into four main orchestras and was conducted by Cody Toll. The concert was completely sold out, and I was quite lucky to get a seat in the middle of the hall where I could see the whole stage and performances. The concert consisted of great pieces and it opened with the festival overture by the Middle School String Orchestra A dubbed “Concert of Strings”. This particular piece began softly as the string instruments ...

The aesthetics of the Baroque era and it's addiction to motion and scale was reflected not only in architecture, sculpture and painting, but it has mainly become obvious in the music. The world of contrasts, contradictions and passion was expressed by major and minor keys. The meaning of the major key is joy, the slightest nuances from tenderness to exultant. The minor key means sadness in melancholy and tragic desperation.

Arturo Sandoval is an outstanding musician who had to overcome a lot of difficulties in order to be able to do the job he was born to – playing the jazz music. Life of Sandoval recalls a musical history book that describes two disparate worlds. For the people who were raised up in the States, it may be hard to imagine what obstacles Arturo Sandoval was faced with to become a jazz musician. He is a great son of Cuba, and this country should be proud of him, but when Sandoval was at the beginning of his career, the government ...

Modernist movement was the catalyst that opened new ways of interpreting art as a tool for political and social discourse reflecting the rise of ideas and improvisation of imagery/performance through the use of contemporary materials available at that time. The term ‘modernist’ ubiquitously dominated the art critiques from the past decades in an attempt to explain the society’s rejection of the traditional iconography of the previous movements. With the advent of rapid industrialization spurred the growth of ideas that defined the social and political landscape of the 20th century. This changes brought by the modernist ideals revolutionized the ...
Last month, there were group of foreigners who suddenly performed a street concert that promotes the awareness of other cultures towards Asian music. The musicians were Asians and played traditional Asian music. A huge crowd gathered in front of the street to watch them as they perform the exotic music from Asia. For instance, one of the music played by the band was the theme of Dae Jang Geum titled Onara. It was a Korean drama based on a real historical figure of Jang Geum, Korea’s first female doctor. I recognized the music earlier and the instruments because ...
The value and respect that citizens have in observing an established government of society is a tradition that has been established for centuries. The puzzling question about government is that it is important to ask where this respect to be a law abiding citizen actually comes from? Historically, there have been many texts throughout the ages that debate the citizen versus the government and how the government claims its inherit right to nurture, control, and aide the citizen. One of the literary works that has been a constant reference throughout the ages of how the citizen is obligated to ...
I recently attended a symphony band concert for a graduating class event at a local school’s auditorium. The song that fascinated me was On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss, a Philip Bliss composition as arranged by David Holsinger. The following is a description of the orchestra and performance. The stage had 30 performers including the conductor. The orchestra consisted three primary sections, namely woodwind, brass, and percussion. The woodwind section comprised of a bassoon, five saxophones, flutes, clarinets, and an oboe. Second, the brass section consisted of a series of trumpets, baritones, a tuba, two French horns, and ...
The meeting of European and African musical cultures in the New World gave rise to a certain specific culture with its own worldview. This fusion of Christianity of paganism fostered the emergence of jazz, and the process of the development of these bipolar cultures resulted in swing, which is often called "the soul of jazz". However, it was the classical origins of jazz that fostered the subsequent formation and orchestral and swing styles. Hence, it is important to know about the nature of classical jazz and analyze its gradual transformation into swing and orchestral styles. With the emergence if ...

Introduction
John Adams has numerous feathers in his cap – a renowned music composer, creative thinker, a music conductor, and several others to his credit. Adams holds a unique place in the American music domain. His compositions, both the opera music as well as the symphony music, are the most notable among the modern classical works. These specific compositions of Adams are special in terms of the depth in their expression, brilliance in terms of sound, and the intensely humanistic feel present within their themes.
Early Life and music
Born and brought up in New England, Adams learnt playing the clarinet from his father and ...
Benny Goodman
Well-known as the "King of Swing" Benny Goodman was more than just a great clarinetist and bandleader. Goodman created the ensemble, famous for its amazing unity and integration (both musically and in terms of race). He enjoyed great social influence, since taking black musicians in his jazz band during a violent bigotry and segregation. Goodman made large orders for the greatest composers of his era, including B. Bartok, and A. Copland. He performed and recorded works of Stravinsky, Brahms, and many others. His virtuoso solo for clarinetists has become an example to follow. Benny Goodman introduced with his own ...
On the evening of December 4, 2015 I attended the live concert performance hosted by Master Showman, Composer and world-renowned violinist, Andre Rieu. The concert even was held at the “3 Arena” (23,000 capacity) in Dublin, Ireland. Andre Rieu has been recognized on many occasions as one of classical music’s greatest performer, conductors, and popularisers. During the entire duration of the classical performance, Rieu was immensely successful in retaining (especially the young generation or non-classical enthusiasts), the attention of the audience by intermissive humour, storytelling, host-to-audience conversation, and a whole lot of promotive dancing/singing along. The concert ...

The main purpose of the current assignment is to analyze one of the performances related to classical music and classical arrangements of modern compositions. In particular, the following paragraphs will discuss and analyze the performance by El Capitan High School Symphonic Band, “Pre-Festival Concert”. It is worth stating that overall performance has been conducted on a considerably high level from the technical point of view despite minor technical peculiarities, which could have been improved and eliminated. The concert included four compositions – First Suite in E Flat by Gustav Holst, Armenian Dances, Part 1 composed by Alfred Reed, O Magnum ...
Firstly it must be said that it was most intriguing to learn that the young person’s guide to orchestra has successfully introduced hundreds of thousands of children to classical music. In saying so, from carefully listening to each variation individually and carefully I have seemingly noticed that the Woodwinds (Variations 1-4) specifically Variation 4 had the quietest approach. The variation consisted of Bassoons punctuated by strings, had it not been for the stringed accompaniment, I believe that it would be rather difficult for the depth-sounded bassoon to make a large impact. However when alongside the other accompaniments, it ...
Recently, I have been to the concert of great American pianist Leon Fleisher with an orchestra at the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center. I do not remember the name of the conductor; however, I perfectly remembered the name of the pianist. Apparently it is becoming a good tradition that Leon Fleisher performs with best orchestras of our time, since the music they played was just a miracle. For long I wanted to visit a concert of classical music, but did not have any chance until I bought a ticket for this orchestra`s performance. Unfortunately, I ...
Although I agree that an orchestra’s main objective is to increase attendance I disagree with the assertion that reducing ticket price will increase the amount that is donated or the attendance rates. Ultimately, the orchestra should focus on producing quality programs and increasing the number of quality programs. I believe this because consumers are willing to pay as much or as little for what they perceive to be valuable. Reducing ticket prices may increase audience attendance slightly but it will not be as significant as increasing the quality of the program. With orchestra, the business thrives on producing ...

Introduction The architecture of theaters has not evolved much from its traditional designs except for new technological additions to enhance production and performance. According to scholars, most modern theater architectures have their roots from that of the ancient Greek theaters. However, the ambiguity of the meaning of theaters among different cultures as well as on how they are being staged has somehow influenced the development of theater space in different countries across the globe. Over the years, the designs of theatres have been influenced by several factors such as the audience capacity and the purpose to which ...
Vivaldi’s Four Seasons
- History The Four Seasons or Le Quattro Stagioni is composed of four violin concertos that were composed by Antonio Vivaldi in 1723. This piece is known to be his most popular classical work and one of the most well-known in the said repertoire. The Four Seasons is also considered as one of the boldest program music in the baroque period. The concertos were first published in 1725. It was intended to be part of a set of 12 concerti, Vivaldi’s 8th Opus with the title “Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione”, which he dedicated to a Bohemian patron named ...
- What is the strategy of the GSO? Please be as specific as you can in identifying both the GSO’s environmental constraints, and how it differs both from the symphony orchestras, and from a professional sports team, which has many similar constraints and objectives? Why do these differences exist?
For a period of four years, Granville Symphony Orchestra experienced deficit, which forced the management to come up with effective, efficient, and attainable strategies. The main strategy of Granville Symphony Orchestra was to increase revenues whilst checking on the expenses. The management proposed many actions or measures to increase revenue as well as check on the expenses. One of the measures was to concentrate on the fixed costs. The Investment Committee and the Resource Committee were given the mandate to check the ratio between fixed costs to endowment income. The ratio between fixed costs to endowment income was to increase ...

The Annie Smith Dance Center 2
In the uploaded exel file there is a financial analysis of the Annie Smith Dance Center. I have analyzed the annual activity of this center and would like to show the results.
With the number of concerts that the center has today we have:
Profit = Revenues – Total Costs = 1 627 500-(765 000+253 000 +515 000) = - 94 500$
It means that the center incurs losses.
I have computed the break even point of number of performances for each type of dance. The results are on lists 2-5 in the exel file. I would like to say some words about the shortcomings of multi-product analysis. According to the Business Owner's Toolkit (2013), the main shortcoming is that ...
In reference to music, the Romantic era was a period of music that started in the early 19th Century. The exact dates of this era are given, as 1815-1910. One of the greatest composers of this period was Franz Schubert. The music of the Romantic era was quite distinct from music of this Classical era, which had just preceded this era. There was a lot of freedom exhibited in the composition of the music of this era. The music placed more importance on the expression of emotion. There was also a tendency to explore imagination, adventure and fantasy though the music of ...
When it comes to classical music, the symphony and the concerto are two of the most recognizable genres. Classical artists like Wolfgang Mozart. J.S Bach, J F. Handel and Beethoven wrote countless symphonies and concertos that are still popular today. Mozart is generally considered a “genius” when it comes to musical compositions and in this essay, two of his greatest works are going to be analyzed and compared. The two works include a symphony and a concerto. The first is the symphony no.40 in G minor, K, 550, (first movement), while the second is the Concerto for Flute for Orchestra in D ...
Arcangelo Corelli
Arcangelo Corelli is one of the greatest violinists. He is considered to be the founder of modern violin technique. Corelli was one of the key figures of Italian music in XVII-XVIII centuries. Corelli’s works, without exaggeration, can be called masterpieces of Italian classical music. His compositions are embodied rigor, modesty and simplicity. But, at the same time, they are written with the perfect taste, in his exquisite manner. His style is clear and unique. You won’t hear such unnecessary details in Corelli’s compositions like external effects, random notes – each sound has own place. And, at ...
MUSIC APPRECIATION
Twentieth century composers were known for the innovativeness, and developed new organizing systems and included sounds like never before never before seen or heard in Western fine art music. Music has grown over time and today, we hear rhythms and blues, psychedelic music to disco and rock, rock and roll, rap, and hip-hop to name a few. Composers like Edwin Outwater, Morton Feldman, Luigi Russolo, and Edgard Varèse have changed the concept of what music is and should be. Melody was a composition that was not overtly preferred by Edwin Outwater. American music composer, Morton Feldman’s orchestra plays ...
The production I watched on YouTube was a modern interpretation of the classic Swan Lake ballet by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky written circa 1875–1876. I searched in the site for more information regarding where this particular production took place, the name of the city or theater but I could not find it. There was no mention of the name of the ballet company or the names of the principal dancers. As would be expected, this dearth of information extended to the orchestra and its conductor. No credit was given to lighting, sound or set design as well. In this production, ...
The price that is paid for poverty does not just affect the poor, it affects are paid for by the society in which that poverty exists. In any society that has poverty, the most vulnerable victims of that poverty are children, who are subject to live in the situations that they were born into. On a micro level, children growing up in impoverished conditions will carry emotional scars, which limit them throughout their adult lives. On the macro level, society will be harmed at various levels due to the prevalence of poverty within their societies. As will be outlined in ...
The first movements of piano concertos by J.C. Bach and W.A. Mozart Mozart’s piano concertos are said to among his best compositions. The Piano Concerto in A Major, K. 488 is testament to this. This graceful composition has three movements and uses small orchestra comprised of instruments from all four classes. The instruments are two flutes, two bassoons, two clarinets and two horns as well the instruments from the string section like the violin. One significant difference of Mozart’s concertos was refusing the harpsichord and clavichord. He started to compose sonata concertos only for piano ...

He uses the personal anecdote of what he was able to do in Venezuela to challenge a change in the education system all over the word. This essay analyzes the rhetorical techniques that Antonio employs in order to make his point and convince his audience ...

The book Blink by Malcolm Gladwell is about how we think without thinking. This can be further explained by illustrating that the choices made instantly in the blink of an eye without actually thinking why they are made. The world around us requires that decisions should be footnoted. This means that if we say how we feel about something we must be ready to elaborate about why we feel a certain way. Blink discloses that a quality of good decision maker is not who can spend time providing deliberate answers or process the information effectively but the one who has perfected ...
