“Los Vendidos” written by Luiz Valdes is a one-act play that depicts and ridicules the stereotypes of Mexicans in California. It is a satiric play that shows the social inequality in the American society in the 1960-ies. So much has been said about the discrimination of the Afro-Americans, but I even could not imagine Latinos and Mexicans facing a similar situation. This play attracts attention to the social issues that have not been solved even after 40 years. Although it is full of ridiculous and rather witty moments, the message of the play is serious and profound. The author ...

The ultimate goal of Minimally Invasive Multivessel Coronary Surgery (MICS) is treating multivessel coronary artery diseases in an endoscopic manner. There is sufficient progress made in minimally invasive surgery where the burden of the patient is minimized to a lower amount. Rodriguez & Ruel, (2016) in their observation notes that in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), minimally invasive surgery is used for assistance in minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass grafting (MICS-CABG) as well as robot-assisted CABG. In MICS-CABG, the surgeon positions small incision than under conventional surgery and conducts the operation on a beating heart. Almost 2.8 vessels are ...
Introduction
Artificial (computer) intelligence is one of the most promising development vectors in computer science and computer engineering. Work in the field of artificial intelligence is aimed at the development of methods, tools and technologies of designing computer systems with a specific function such as training, expert advising, robotics, and others. Unlike conventional programmers, who are involved in the development of well-specified software, artificial intelligence experts are additionally able to formulate specifications, which is one of the biggest challenges in the design of any product. However, the issue remains, as questions continue to arise as to whether human-equivalent artificial intelligence ...
Introduction
The term ‘social robot’ has become popular in the modern world and is almost being integrated into the modern day cultural constructs as usual. Lamers & Verbeek (2010) maintain that social technology is meant to invoke emotional attributes and to engage the human mind in a way that exceeds what is physical. Lamers & Verbeek (2010) argue that a robot is man’s effort at recreating his own self and it is with this semblance that the conceptualization of human-robot interaction has been captured. Dating back from the 18th century, inventors and scientists alike have been making numerous attempts at making ...
A. Neuromancer and Cyberpunk Film
Neuromancer discusses the ways in which people augment their bodies with technology, which can easily be seen in elements of The Matrix. The mixture of machine and man is found in The Matrix through the plugs and cables the humans use to connect to the virtual world, most notably the invasive, penetrative plug used to ‘jack in’ to the Matrix through the back of their heads. This is compared to Molly Millions’ razor-nails and eye augmentations found in Neuromancer – both fusion of man and machine used to grant the user abilities not available to them as organic life forms. ...

Various methods of hazard analysis has been developed. Two of these processes are System-Theoretical Process Analysis (STPA) and Safety-Guided Design Process. This essay is going to focus on STPA and Safety-Guided Design Process. The first part will focus on STPA and it will the process of using STPA including the background behind it and how the technique is reflected in systems engineering. There is also a description of how the process is used to accommodate human controllers. The second part of the essay will focus on the Safety-Guided Design Process and how it is applied in industrial robotics. There ...
Externality takes place when action of one agent exerts direct impact on welfare of other agent, and this impact is not transferred by market prices. When there are externalities in the market, the social marginal cost is not equal to private marginal cost. Positive externalities compel market to produce less than the socially desirable quantity (Gans, King & Mankiw, 2011). Positive externalities are present in the economy when marginal social benefits are greater than marginal private benefits (Cypher, 2014). There are, however, several examples of economic activities that pave the way to production of positive externalities such as:
Provision of Education
Industrial training ...
Movie Review: THX-1138
THX-1138, the main character in the film THX-1138, works as a magnum operator in cell 94107. He was literally created to manipulate the magnum along with other people in his society. In general, the THX-1138 movie is one of the best films that the creator of Star Wars, George Lucas, has ever scripted and directed. In 1976, Lucas produced Electronic Labyrinth: THX-113: 4EB, a short film that won various awards and introduced Lucas to movie fans globally (“George Lucas Biography”). The success of Electronic Labyrinth impressed the director of The Godfather, Frances Coppela, who urged Warner Brothers to provide ...

Robotic- assisted surgery has revolutionized the surgical practice since its inception and allows surgeons to use minimally invasive techniques in cardiac, urology, and general surgeries. Robotic surgery is quickly becoming an alternative to standard laparoscopic approaches to surgery and especially in the area of urology. Even though the use of robotic- assisted surgery is more advantageous than conventional methods, its use is hinged on the surgical teams training and experiences with it. The study examines the frequency of use of the technique among various surgical teams and their response to its effectiveness. The research design of the study begins ...
Asimov’s Laws of Robotics
Since discussions of robots and artificial intelligence began, humans began to wonder if the idea of AI was even safe. Would robots harm us? Would it be okay to allow a robot to function without a human controlling it at all times? And even if we were to allow it, how would we know for sure? Asimov’s three laws of robotics suggest if we take proper precautions, it may be possible to allow artificial intelligence to exist in today’s world. However, Asimov’s laws state a robot will never harm a human, which would make a robot’ ...
Manga and anime are two of the most defining parts of the Japanese culture that are known worldwide. Considered as Japan’s authentic forms of animation, manga and anime play a big role in propelling the Japanese culture further into worldwide recognition. Manga is defined as the Japanese comic animation or the animation that the Japanese produce in print while anime refers to the Japanese digital animation or the animation that the Japanese produce digitally through multimedia. These two distinct forms of Japanese animation have been an integral part of popular culture for years in Japan and have played ...
This is an analysis of the essay “Better than Human: Why Robots Will-and Must –Take Our Jobs” by Kevin Kelly. The essay is an argumentative piece where the author attempts to argue that robots are indeed replacing human beings in most jobs. The author raises a number of arguments to support his side of the story. Notably, robots and machines are widely used in most jobs in the current era of industrialization. The author stages a number of reasons as to why robots and machines are used today. He goes ahead to argue that soon, human beings will be ...
The twenty first century has already seen a rapid technoligization of practically every aspect of life. Indeed, it could not but affect the labor force. The question is: in what way has it done so? Firstly and foremostly, apart from obvious computerization, we can speak of robots being introduced in the labor force environment. There are two facets of this process – the positive one and the negative one. As for the first, robots have taken on the most difficult and in certain cases most dangerous work. As for the second, it may be justly maintained that robots have endangered ...
It is quite true that there are several projects that Google is working on, and they also intrigue my conscious. The idea of Google Glass, Elevator to Space, Robots, Project Wing and Self-driving cars are all aiming at ensuring that the lives of human beings become as much easier as possible. Consider the self-driven cars, the instance of an underage individual requiring car service while they cannot drive will be eliminated by this factor. Major car collisions will be reduced due to the speed that the car uses. Do you believe that some of the projects will be successful? ...
The use of technology has enhanced how robotic devices can interact with humans in nature. “The use of robots can be used for many reasons without the use of harm” . The technological advancement that has become of our universe allows robotic devices to be used regularly. Laws of Robots consist of three different rules. The speculative scenario of technology is represented as robots will control or take over the earth one day because of the technology. The first rule of robotic law is that a robot cannot hurt a person or conflict harm of a human being. The second ...
Isaac Asimov Reason
In my opinion, Isaac Asimov uses humor and irony first to mock QT, Powell and Donovan with the help of humorous situations that happen in the story. QT does not believe that he was created by people and tries to analyze and find the answers. He does not believe in what the Earthmen tell him, even in what he read in books. When QT says that his purpose is to serve the Master, Powell and Donovan laugh at him and his words. But the real irony is that QT acts the same way all the people do – they try ...
In his short story, Reason, Isaac Asimov subtly uses irony in order to demonstrate people`s nature. He distorts readers` expectations to see intelligent and reasoning robot that exceeds humans in cognitive abilities thus demonstrating the other level of evolution and development. By portraying robot QT-1 Asimov not only mocks QT`s pretensions to grandeur but also he illuminates people`s worst traits of character, like ignorance and blind faith covered with make-believe ‘facts’. This robot has tunnel vision that limits his perception of facts and, as a result, deprives him from reasonable and logical evaluation of situation. QT ...
The science-fiction authors are interested in writing about the robots which develop the ability to behave or think like the human being. Isaac Asimov and Brian Aldiss are two of these authors. These authors exaggerate the influence of the robotic contribution to the human life. Even, they try to develop the idea of replacing humans with the robots as relatives more than being a part of productions humans need. I will compare and contrast the two authors’ stories in this paper. The main subject I will discuss is the idea of robots can play an essential role in human ...

I2C Communication between Raspberry Pi and Arduino After connecting the Raspberry Pi and the Arduino through I2C, the environment on the Raspberry Pi is set up. The Raspberry Pi identifies Arduino Uno by detecting the slave address sent by Arduino Uno. The slave address is set through the uploaded program code on the Arduino. The following test was conducted for testing the I2C bus between the Raspberry Pi and the Arduino. The address was set to 00×04. Below is the result when i2cdetect –y 1 is typed allowing the Raspberry Pi to detect the connected slaves through I2C. ...
Introduction
It is important for every mobile robot to possess the ability to navigate in target environment. Navigation can be described here as the robotic system’s ability to identify its own position in an unknown area with respect to some reference point and then move to its target position. In order to navigate in its environment and reach target position correctly, an efficient control system should be designed. The aim of this project is to design and implement a mobile robot localisation and control. The mobile robot is developed with the ability of:
Localisation System
For a positioning system, it is required ...
As a mobile robot operates in environment, its actual position and orientation are not exactly the same as targeted. Therefore, it is important to know about the robot’s definite current position for controlling it. In this section, three methods for positioning are described; using encoders, using ultrasonic ranging sensor, and using both ultrasonic and encoder sensors.
Positioning Using Encoder
In order to position the robot using encoders, it is necessary to take two steps. First, encoders should provide the current robot position. Second, it is important to reach the target position given by the supervisor.
Receiving the Robot’s Current Position Using Encoder
It is imperative to know the ...
Medical area is being improved with the technological advances under which robotic-assisted surgeries have been increasing in their numbers on the global scale. Based on the Bertram et al. (1637) in the last decades a minimal invasive revolution has been seen also in the area of urology, but the access and the acceptance of robotic-assisted surgery is variable across the geographical locations. There is still a lack of documentation in the area of the robotic-assisted surgeries, but it is becoming increasingly prevalent. The use of technology, availability and perception differs across countries as well as geographical locations and hospitals ( ...

The ASIMO’s concept of a chair is not an instance of Searle’s original intentionality. In this context, intentionality can be translated roughly to mean representation. According to Searle, it is not right to say that a machine can think by virtue of running programs. in such instances, the intentionality that is characteristic of these programs comes from the original intention of the interrogator and the programmer. These two people are outside the machine. Thus, the machine is not making judgments based on thoughts. Rather, it is just giving specific answers to the specific questions based on the ...
Recently there have been many talks about the development of robotics. It is common knowledge that the popularity of robots is increasing very quickly. Every year more or more upgraded robots appear in the world. There are many opinions regarding this topic. Many people agree that the development of robots, especially service robots, could make their lives much easier. Robots could take care of kids and elderly population or do the dirty and some difficult work. However, it seems that people underestimate the negative sides of robotics. They tend to forget about ethical issues and, what is more important, ...

In the recent past, NASA has been doing excellent and outstanding things in the outer space. The media has hyped the show and depicted NASA as a genius (Frederick). Most people says the operations of NASA are exhilarating, but on my side, I am left flabbergasted! Could the skills used to put a man on the moon duplicated to improve the state of the life of humans? Can’t they decide to invent robots that will play an essential role to curb the rising insecurities? NASA commitments and objectives just boil my blood. Personally, I am not moved by ...

The group report presents the final product as the smart pan. According to the group report, the initial ideas led to the final product. The task undertaken for evaluating the final product came ...
Cinema transformed from a tool to display attractions to a medium to express feelings in which directors convey their opinions and ideas. Therefore, political and social events around the world started to become subjects for more and more films. Encapsulating the society’s ideologies and myths, films became a potent means for manipulation and for reinforcing the society’s norms and values. However, for the directors themselves, films soon transformed in artistic works in which they could use subversive techniques in order to question and to critique agents of power. The 2010 Hindi film “Robot” and the Korean film “ ...
Abstract
In the recent times, scientists in the discipline of artificial intelligence are confused which approach closely imitates the structure of a human brain. The best two approaches are bottom-up, or the top-down, and they comprise of both their advantages and disadvantages. The top-down approach has the capability to perform high-level tasks since it is programmed (Russell et.al 27). On the contrary, the bottom-up approach is capable of modeling the lower-level human functions such as motor control, image recognition, and learning capabilities. Each method operates perfectly where the other method is imperfect. Therefore, to establish the advantages and disadvantages of ...
As technology advances and researchers develop new applications for technological discoveries, they may open Pandora’s Box by giving consumers too much freedom to try, and very difficult choices to make. In her article, “The Made-To-Order Savior”, Lisa Belkin shows how the modern technology involved in human reproduction can be used in order to save a child’s life. The author compares the story of two children, of whom one had the chance of being able to use this technology, and this saved her life. However, for this to happen, her parents needed to have a perfectly matching sibling ...
When I was in the first grade, one of my friends dressed exactly like Troy Dungan, the weatherman on one of local news stations, as often as he could. That meant that he wore a bow tie and round eyeglasses (even though he could see perfectly fine). He would draw hypothetical weather maps over and over, just to reiterate the different symbols for the different sort of events (rain, hail, lightning, snow and the like) – symbols that no longer show up on modern television because of the different graphical elements available but still appear on the maps that meteorologists ...

The technique of high-frequency trading has been around for years, but especially close attention and a new surge of interest in it arose after the sensational release in May 2010 of the book by Michael Lewis “Flash Boys”. In fact, it is hard to call high-frequency trading methodology a revolutionary or even new. Although now, talking about it, everyone remembers high-performance computers and automatic programs with elements of artificial intelligence, but if to leave these technological “tricks” and the terms out of the brackets, everything becomes much easier. Actually, we are dealing with a business model, when using a ...
IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON SOCIETY
Introduction According to Perrow (1967), technology is an action used to transform inputs to outputs. In other words, technologies are the tasks of individuals producing outputs. In microelectronics, technology can be viewed as those devices that make use of microprocessors and microcomputers. It also refers to user support services that are provided to assist users in performing the tasks. Technology is beneficial to man since it simplifies tasks for him, to work faster and efficiently. It also helps men to fit well to their environment. The main reason why technology is advancing is to improve the living standards of ...

Many people view I, Robot as a movie about mankind losing control over technology and the dire consequences that it would have on society. While any change in power dynamics, no matter how trivial cannot happen without some kind of consequence. This is not the most important theme of I, Robot. The most important idea in the movie is “what is humanity?” and “what does it mean to be human?”. To answer this question, I will look at the character of Sonny in the film. The movie I, Robot is set in downtown Chicago in the year 2035. Society ...

In a recent article for The Atlantic magazine titled “A World Without Work”, Derek Thompson (2015) describes as an impending “era of technological unemployment,” where automation as a result of technological advances will result in a steady and widespread decline in jobs, which Thompson characterizes as permanent. Thompson writes that the end of work does not necessarily signify a full on and impending end to employment as we know it in the economy. Neither does it suggest that the next decade will usher in uncontrollable levels of unemployment, either. What it suggests is the very real and live possibility ...
I, Robot is a collection of short stories by Isaac Asimov written in the 40s and published as a collection in 1950. These are all stories related to the concept of robotics, and in particular highly advanced and intelligent robots. While the short stories as originally written had no single-story thread, these stories did all exist in a common universe and on occasion characters from one story will show up in one of the other stories, such as robopsychologist Susan Calvin or other less important characters like Powell or Donovan. Moreover, in order to tie them all together when ...
History of Manufacturing Engineering
The history of manufacturing engineering can be raced back to the 19TH century in the United States and to 18TH century in the United Kingdom when home based mass production gained roots in the industrial productions in the two countries. However, many historic scholars view Matthew Boulton Soho`s manufactory that was established in Birmingham in 1761 as the beginning of the modern production firms. There are similar claims attributed to John Lombe`s silk mill that was constructed in 1721 at Derby or 1771 Cromford mill done by Richard Arkwright (In Quickenden, In Baggott & In Dick, 2013). Significant ...
As robots proceed to ubiquity within societal environments, there has been a concern related to the consequences of proliferation (Sharkey, 2008). Humans are faced with the dilemma of having to choose particular options that they intend to act upon where every available option will have their moral obligation that connects to what they are related. Ethical considerations, however, in practice is to consider resolution means for such issues. There are different schemes that can be adopted for holding such moral deliberations. However, the option of the scheme in case of any, to apply is up to an individual to ...
