Arguably, the ancient empire of Mali took over after the fall of Ghana Empire around 1240AD. Certainly, the first capital in the Mali Empire was Djeriba, Niani, and Mali respectively. Perhaps, the powerful kingdom began to lose its influence and power in the course of 16th century.
