Strategies for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) show differential developments over years. Traditional classroom settings of language learning are becoming less and less viable for effective language learning and acquisition. This paper aims to provide a schematic presentation of five major approaches to TESOL namely, vocabulary, communicative, whole language, total physical response and musical approaches.
The vocabulary approach is a long adopted method for TESOL. Research on Chineses students (Gu and Johnson, 2006), for example, shows vocabulay-based strategies enhance vocabulary repertoire as opposed to language proficiency.
The communicative approach, meanwhile, introduces a different perspective on language learning ...

The legislation proposition drafted with regards to the learning of English of non-native speakers of the language in the United States took effect in states of California, Arizona and Massachusetts (Mora, 2009). This legal proposition requires that English language learners learn English through an English structured or sheltered immersion for one year (Mora, 2009). The immersion program requires that learners study using the English language exclusively in order to enhance the fluency of the learners in the language. The legislation only allows students to study in classes using their native language as language of instruction in exceptional cases through a ...
Teaching English language to people in different countries that are non-native speakers entails a lot of duties and responsibilities. An English teacher should apply the principles of motivation in most, if not all, aspects of language learning acquisition . There is a need for proper preparation/planning, execution, assessment/evaluation, and re-evaluation of students’ learning. Primarily, a teacher should look at, not only his /her role and perspective teaching the subject, but also consider the personal viewpoints and motivation of young learners. Thus, questions arise as to: Why is motivation important in the classroom? Why do students have different types of motivation? How do teachers ...
Discourse as defined by Gee refers to the distinctive ways of speaking, acting, and writing. It is often coupled with the manner of interacting, dressing, mental thought, among other day to day activities. Discourses, in other words, refers to the cultural influences that contribute into the identity of an individual granted from the social setup in which he or she is exposed to. Therefore, Discourses are unique for particular groups of people depending on their cultural practises. It is essential to note that discourse is not static and easily changes from one way to another as people are exposed ...
The core concept in education in Great Britain is inclusion. As a result of high rates of immigration to UK, schools in Britain have had to adjust their teaching methodologies so as to satisfy the perpetual demand of students wanting to learn English as a second language. This fact is reinforced by statistics that show that there are 500,000 students taking English as a second language in the UK education system today (Barwell, 2004, p329). “The situation in Britain is referred to as EAL (English as an Additional Language), which takes priority in comparison to strategies such as teaching children ...

The best way, it seems to learn another language, which in my case is English, is by the constant exposure of that language. Every day there must be a portion of time set aside in order to better learn a language, and a person who want to learn should expose themselves to many cases where English is to be learned. This essay explains through research the motivations for learning English as a foreign language, common learning styles, and different approaches that a learner can employ to learn and learning styles out there. People learn languages in different ways. Some are visual learners, others ...
Business Communication
Business Communication for English as a Second Language Speaker In the 21st century, businesses have increased cultural interaction in the workplace. Most places of work have become a haven of multicultural association due to the positive impact it has on running business. Despite the multicultural benefits, there has emerged certain issues that my cause miscommunication in the offices. Employees who speak English as a second language (ESL) bring about most of these issues in communication. Stephens, SiIbert, and Hasson (2010) argue that though they might have learnt to speak English elsewhere, the native speakers often have a different dialect that may cause ...
English as a Second Language
The influence of Arabic as a language is profound on many languages especially the influence on vocabulary. Indeed, many languages derive their vocabulary from Arabic in spite of the fact that the latter is largely used in Islamic countries. 1.2 billion Muslims worldwide employ the use of Arabic language in religious citations and prayers (Carter & MnCarthy, 2009).
Background of the Study
Teaching English, as a foreign language, to native Muslims or Arabic speaking country nationals may invoke questions that could be ordinary to ask for other languages as taught in the classroom. Such questions are spread in language literature and include personal questions like: ...
Abstract
There are a number of factors that lead to efficient learning and teaching, especially for children. This discussion will center around two different episodes that have occurred in the English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom-- these two episodes will be analyzed in the context of a number of different motivation and learning theories, including Maslow’s theory of motivation and the theories of multiple intelligences. The goal for ESL classrooms is always to encourage the best possible functional use for the English language; understanding students and encouraging them to participate in the learning process is the first step in encouraging good, ...
There are many things that go into the consideration of a lesson plan, but perhaps the most important thing is encouraging young students to be both creative and risk-taking with language. Students who are happy to memorize but unwilling to speak in English are not the students who develop the most effective communication skills; perhaps the most important thing in the course of teaching these students is encouraging this creativity in them. Students who are afraid or too embarrassed to speak in class must be treated carefully and encouraged to speak up; this will give them a confidence boost that is ...

English Speakers of Other Languages
In the study of the particular filed experience, an important aspect which has been obtained is that of second language acquisition. Particularly for English speakers of other languages, it is an important factor that influences understanding and communication. One particular theory of second language acquisition is behaviorism theory that state language is basically a set of structures and acquisition of the same is dependent on habit formation . In other words, it states that acquisition of a language is dependent on the acquisition of automatic linguistic habits. The reason this theory is highlighted here is Rashel has exhibited the same factors.

There is trouble brewing in America today. The issue stems from a topic in education regarding the effects of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) as they pertain to ESL students. In other words, how do the Common Core State Standards effect ESL students? First, an understanding of the CCSS protocol and implementations must be understood. According to the official TESOL International Association, several acknowledgments must be taken into account. The organization communicates an overview of CCSS intentions and practices, as well as a framework for its structure and implementations. Therefore, the first step and task of this research paper is ...

Teaching strategies for ESL students in the Mainstream High School English Classroom
Introduction The rise of the English language as a basic communication skill needed in the corporate world has become one of the reasons why non-native English speakers find it of utmost importance and therefore, would enroll in English language courses. Bilingual people are those who speak more than two languages, since birth or at their daycare level, till maturity. Bilingual education in America was dated back one hundred and fifty years ago, where non-native English speakers were not allowed to learn any language other than getting to learn the English language. This oppression on the English speakers was noted to be creating anxiety in the congress house citing national unity and cohesion being disintegrated as their basis of the argument to dismantle it (Baker, 2011). However, the federal and state law currently recognizes and tends to protect the bilingual ...
The discussion on language and context confirmed my understanding that learning English as a second language was not a linear process. According to the first reading, learning English as a second language involves the participation of both students as well as teachers in different circumstances (Gibbons, 2012, p. 30). This is because of the fact that learning is a collaborative activity that requires the active participation of primary stakeholders. In this case, teachers and students are the primary stakeholders. I have had practical experiences whereby I am unable to use a second language in different contexts. I always feel comfortable making conversations with familiar ...

I began learning English because I considered it as an important part of my education. Much of the world speaks English. I plan to travel and want to be able to communicate with many people. Learning a few of the languages that the majority of the world speak will make that easier for me. Being bilingual makes getting a job easier as well. Many classmates of mine have also learned English as a second language, a good friend of mine from South Africa, in particular. When I began learning English I knew a few students who already spoke English. Some spoke it as ...

Abstract
In second language acquisition, the teaching methods are primarily meant to contribute to learner’s acquisition of the language, not learning of the targeted foreign language. This implies focusing on communication (enhancing the vocabulary) and on process rather than on grammar and on product (learning the language). In this context, for stimulating the communication, teachers need to create relaxed environments for the learners to feel comfortable in communicating and interacting among themselves, sharing their experience with others and in the same time learning from various strategies or language acquisition methods. Such language acquisition methods are presented in the current ...
John Agard’s, ‘Checking out Me History’ is an intricately written poem pointing out on the observation of the English Curriculum as biased to only white people. In the poem, Agard notes that all the English literature, is written by white people for white people. He reveals that the Curriculum intentionally leaves out, distorts and hides important information about black women and men who similarly deserve to be recognized (Seeto 2009). His analysis portrays the fact that controlling what people learn about their past, controls their thoughts, self- identity, and the present (Seeto 2008). There are wide varieties ...

Perhaps it is clichéd to say, but the world is increasingly interconnected. Jet travel and the internet facilitate international dialogue in ways hitherto unimagined. In earlier ages, for an individual to visit another nation required vast resources and involved much personal risk. However, today, direct dialogue with people on opposite ends of the earth is a commonplace occurrence, and the completion of large transactions, advanced levels of education, or negotiating the finer points of an international treaty, occurs daily using modern communication infrastructure. Today the international traveler is quite usual, and personal connections with people from other parts of ...

Language is an important aspect of human beings that helps in shaping the identity of an individual or a certain group of people. People from a particular region or community are able to identify persons from another different community based on the uniqueness of their language dialect or accent. When a person speaks their mother tongue, other people can easily know the specific nationality or cultural background. They are therefore able to identify them as different. This way, language shapes a person’s or community’s identity, especially where people are interacting in a mainstream culture and/or a standard language. It is important to discuss ...

English Language Learners
The number of students who speak English as their second language continues to increase in the United States, especially in Arizona, Texas, California, New York, and Florida (Cho & Larke 1). It is common in elementary classrooms for these students to communicate with other students in the class who are bilingual in order to learn the lessons that are being taught. This type of communication and learning style is known as conversational repair. It helps to reduce the misunderstanding of the English Language Learner (ESL) students that often exist due to the lack of language comprehension. However, many teachers do ...
Tutoring Two ESL Students
Statement of Research Focus
In this research paper, I will investigate the process involved in tutoring two ESL students who want to learn English as their second language. I will tutor them using four effective literacy approaches that are to be discussed later in this paper. I originally came up with the idea of tutoring these students because most of the ESL students use the internet to learn the English language, which is a tool not recommended in the learning process (Chomsky, 2003). In addition, most of the tutors that teach the English language do not understand the literacy approaches ...

English is referred to as the Lingua Franca of the globe. Due to technological evolution and growth of e-learning systems, English language has become one the most significant instruments of formal communication across the globe. Since the world’s knowledge is commonly upheld in English, it is considered as a common tool of communication across diverse nationalities. Being a global and most preferred language, English is able to deal with the issue of cross-cultural communication.
Teaching of this language is invariably difficult. In regions and countries where English is a primary native language, it seems more crucial and painstaking to teach non-native ...
Portfolio Reflective Statement
They say that music is the universal language because everybody who listens to it understands it and can relate to it, at least metaphorically. However, in the business world, I think that English is the “universal language.” This may not be a fact, but given that it is the most widely used language in the realm of business, I think that English may as well be the universal language. Especially with the ongoing trend in globalization, I have come to believe that the ability to communicate in English is becoming even more important.
This is true not only in the ...
English is the second most popular language in the world after Chinese (Esack, 2004). In non-English speaking countries, English is taught as a second language through courses that may be taken in tertiary institutions of education (Esack, 2004). The objective of this essay is to find out how students are able to learn English as a second language and ...

The Effectiveness of Implementing Blogs in Reading Classroom for Adult English Learners
Introduction
The use of digital media in the classroom setting in higher education has been explored by researchers due to the growing prevalence of information access via digital media among young adults (Hsu & Wang, 201) and the emergence of new literacies. In particular, the use of blogs as a learning tool has been investigated in many previous studies. However, although previous studies have shown a positive relation between blogging and motivation, there are not that many studies that focused specifically on the impact of blogging on the improvement of reading and comprehension skills among adult English learners. As well, most of ...
English as a Second Language
Learning or acquisition of any language as a second one remains a challenge to anyone particularly if the countries of origin barely use it in their regular life (Boscov, 2012). This was my case was when I started learning English as my second language. I faced many obstacles to gain good command of English but I am happy I made it even though not proficient enough. It is important to note that the level of efficiency required by the learner highly relies on the area they want to apply it to. For instance, as a student who was to use English a ...

One of the biggest problems facing qualitative research in the field of education is how to be certain that the quality presented by the research is trustworthy. It is often too common to assume that the quality of research presents itself a powerful knowledge that is too convincing in its own right. However, this is not supposed to be the case as qualitative research studies have to be subjected to critical evaluation using criteria in order to justify its value. Whenever qualitative research studies are evaluated for the quality of their value, it helps to eliminate unnecessary criticism from ...

English as a Second Language in Great Britain: A Review of the Situation English as a Second Language (EAL) has been realized in mainstream British educational system only after the Labour party came into governance in 1997. Previously, students with English as their second language had to wait to attain a certain level of English proficiency to get into mainstream British schools (Araújo, 2007, p241). The main concern that teachers address is not whether EAL students are academically competent or if their English is just not on par to accomplish goals; but rather the question of how to cater ...
