A small personal injury law firm needed to invest in improved technology. However, the partners did not grow up with computers and did not trust them to maintain client information security. Some courts began requiring that law firms file certain documents on line and the partners needed to upgrade again to comply with legal court document filing requirements. When the firm last upgraded technology, it was to comply with malpractice insurance requirements for automated scheduling. That installation was more successful than anticipated, and the firm saved money on its insurance and ran more smoothly. However, in spite of this success, or perhaps because of it, the partners were reluctant to make any large changes and the system needed upgrades.
The two senior partners were the final decision makers, but they spoke to everyone on the staff to get their input. The firm needed a higher speed connection that was readily available to all staff and more Internet security to make sure confidential medical and financial would not be accessible to potential hackers. The new connections and security saved the firm time and money by streamlining the court filing process. With the advent of greater client medical information available on line, the upgrade also made this information available.
When their accounting produced the year-end statements the partners could see by the billing reports that the staff spent less time preparing court filings when they filled them out on line and submitted them directly. This saved staff time printing, copying and mailing documents. The attorneys also noticed that staff was spending less time acquiring medical reports when they did it on line. This was a purely subjective observation. Hhowever, it was substantiated by the staff’s ability to take on more cases per support staff member.
