Introduction
The Annunciation by the God’s messenger Angel Gabriel to the Blessed Virgin Mary of the birth of a son is written not only in Luke’s Gospel but also in Quran that is the Holy book of Muslims. The Holy Quran was blessed upon the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) in Arabia in the seventh century. In the Holy Quran, the story of Maryam is mentioned not once but twice, and Surah 19 is named under Maryam (written as Mary in Gospel). In this paper, the Gospel of Luke chapter 1 and the Qur’anic Surah 19 Maryam will be compared and contrasted.
Comparison and contrast of Surah 19 Maryam in Quran and Chapter 1 in Luke Gospel
When we compare both Surah 19 on Maryam and Luke chapter 1 in Gospel, they both proclaim almost the same story in many aspects of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Both the books claim that an angel Gabriel announced to Maryam (Mary in Luke) that she will give birth to a son to which she responded amazed that she is a virgin and did not have any sinful act with a man. The angel announced that virginity was not an obstacle for God as He is able to create a child within her without a human father. The Holy book of Quran, however further elaborates the abrupt ending of Luke’s Gospel when it started in Chapter 1 that “nothing is impossible for God” (1:37) by explaining that when God has decided something he will just say “Be” and it will happen as it is easy for God to do what is difficult for earthly people. The God’s Spirit is involved in this miraculous birth of the baby to the Blessed Virgin Mary in both the versions and the child is named in Jesus. Maryam accepts the message given by the messenger of God in both Surah 19 Maryam in Quran and Chapter 1 of Luke in Gospel but her acceptance in the Quran is not as overtly verbal as stated in Chapter 1 of Luke Gospel.
The main difference exists when the details are stated that the son will be born to Mary. In the Holy book of Quran, Jesus is not termed as the “Son of God” as mentioned in Chapter 1 of Luke Gospel neither has he spent his life being a king although he is definitely called a Messiah or Christ. The Holy Quran places great emphasis on the inner qualities of Jesus that he was honorable and righteous and comprehensively describing that he learnt the Holy Scripture and was sent as a messenger of God for the children of Israel with healing powers, rising the dead matters and foreknowledge of the events to come.
Conclusion
It is important to note that both the accounts state similar facts on the Annunciation by the God’s messenger Angel Gabriel to the Blessed Virgin Mary of the birth of a son but both the Surah 19 of Quran and Chapter 1 of Luke Gospel state a major difference that is claiming Jesus as the Son of God.
